Editors Alert: USA:Feb.06: February 14 Valentines Day is just around the corner and the rise of ‘Romance Scams’ known to the authorities as ‘Confidence Scams’ result in the highest amount of financial losses compared to other internet facilitated crimes, according to Mollie Halpern of the FBI Bureau said this week.
The average complainant loses over a hundreds of thousand of dollars every year, just looking for love. What they find are people that are vulnerable and willing to part with huge amounts of dollars, just to find that perfect mate.
According to Donna Gregory: FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, or IC3, which saw more than $82 million in victim losses in the last six months of 2014. Females suffered 82 percent of the losses; males sustained the remaining 18 percent. Both the amount of losses and number of complaints of the crime considerably increased over recent years, despite being classified differently. Anyone is susceptible to this emotional-based crime.
Donna Gregory said: A lot of them promise love, romance, to entice their victims online, but predators, they’re trolling the Internet, looking for victims.
Mollie Halpern said:: Romance scammer’s use social media—not just dating websites—to prey on their victims. Report romance scams at www.ic3.gov.
So be careful on who you pay to find your perfect mate this Valentines Day.
