Most candidates are pretty vapid people. They have to be by the very nature of their profession. They have to believe above and beyond all else that they are right and the detractors are wrong. They can’t spend time listening to people like me (if they disagree with me), or you, or people with common sense. That’s exactly why Barack Obama can be so damn smug while being so damn wrong.
Hillary Clinton is finding out how tough it is to be a politician, without really having been one. Oh, she was a US Senator, sure. But that was pretty much handed to her. She’s never had to fight for anything in her life except the nomination in 2008, which she lost. And this year, doesn’t look like it’s going to be much better for her.
The reason is simple. Money fuels politics, and Hillary is having a hell of a time raising it. So much so, that earlier this week, she had a “women’s only” fund-raiser in New York City, a fairly liberal enclave if you ask most intelligent people. They were going to take 125 or so people at a mid-town Manhattan law office and stop selling tickets on noon on Sunday for the Monday afternoon event. By noon on Sunday, they realized ticket sales of $2,700 apiece were sucking sewer air. So they did the only thing they could do…they opened it up to men as well. They ended up with 50 people. Now, I gotta tell you. I’m not the most popular guy in the world, but I’m sure I could go to a fundraiser in a state I’ve lived in for all of four years, and while I probably couldn’t take in $2,700 a seat, I know I could get more than 50 people!
Hillary showed up at 1pm for the noon event…had some pictures taken with the crowd, gave a 20 minute speech, and was out the door by 2pm.
And if you were to look at her schedule for the next few weeks, it’s jammed with political fundraisers. She’s not raising money for senate candidates this time. This is her ass on the line…and she’s having a hell of a time with it. So much so that the Democratic National Committee’s finance chief is eschewing their “primary neutrality rules” that prohibit people like him from supporting a candidate, and is helping her raise money. That doesn’t bode well for any candidate.
Especially one that has no competition!
And that’s the mess Hillary finds herself in. Meanwhile, the billionaires are lined up across the aisle throwing money at their favorites on the GOP side…as their number of candidates continue to grow, promising a robust primary season. Hillary? She can’t fill a room. Which may be the reason why she only does selected “scripted events” with about 6 people. Maybe that’s all the people she can find that want to hear what she has to say?
Carry on world…you’re dismissed!
