The topic of racism has made its way to the forefront of the political arena. Since the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina last week every politician has shared their thoughts on why Dylann Roof shot nine innocent people in their church. The debate has turned to the Confederate flag that flies in the state capitol, gun control, and even the Millennial generation. Now, President Barak Obama has decided to weigh in with his own thoughts.

In an interview with comedian Marc Maron for his popular podcast, where crass language is often used, our president sat down to talk about racism. Obama said that while attitudes on race have improved since he was born to a white mother and a black father, the legacy of slavery “casts a long shadow and that’s still part of our DNA that’s passed on.”

I’d love to hear about the science behind that statement. What he’s really describing is learned behavior, not something genetic. It’s people like Obama that willfully pass it on to the next generation.

I’d love to hear about the science behind that statement. What he’s really describing is learned behavior, not something genetic. It’s people like Obama that willfully pass it on to the next generation.

Obama also threw his two cents in on the murders in Charleston, saying, “Racism, we are not cured of it, and it’s not just a matter of it not being polite to say n****r in public. That’s not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It’s not just a matter of overt discrimination. Societies don’t, overnight, completely erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years prior.”

He’s actually right on this point, because we have people who constantly bring it up, despite the fact that no one alive today ever was a slave or owned one. It’s a part of our history, and that’s where it should remain.

He then turned his attention to his favorite topic — gun control. “The grip of the NRA on Congress is extremely strong,” he said. “I will tell you, right after Sandy Hook, Newtown, when 20 6-year-olds are gunned down, and Congress literally does nothing — yes, that’s the closest I came to feeling disgusted. I was pretty disgusted.”

Obama said it’s important to respect that hunting and sportsmanship are important to gun-owning Americans, but still believes that more can be done to stop evil people from committing crimes. “The question is just is there a way of accommodating that legitimate set of traditions with some common-sense stuff that prevents a 21-year-old who is angry about something or confused about something, or is racist, or is deranged, from going into a gun store and suddenly is packing, and can do enormous harm,” President Obama said in a reference to suspect Dylann Roof’s twisted manifesto
