Intelligence specialist Navy Reserve, Petty Officer 2nd Class Janaye Ervin, finds herself at the center of controversy having failed to either salute or stand as the National Anthem played during the morning flag-raising at Pearl Harbor, and she isn’t the first.
Ervin, who is assigned in North Island, California’s Navy Operational Support Center was in Hawaii for an exercise at the time.
Threatened with jail time for her actions, Ervin tried to explain herself via a ‘since-deleted’ Facebook post, according to Daily Mail.
“I feel like a hypocrite singing about the ‘land of the free’ when I know that only applies to some Americans,” she wrote.
Ervin has also lost her security clearance for her stunt but assures that she “will gladly stand again, when ALL AMERICANS are afforded the same freedom.”
On Facebook, Ervin went on to say, “The Navy has decided to punish me for defending the Constitution and has taken away my equipment I need to do my Naval job.”
Ervin, however, is not the first service member to refuse to salute the flag. An unidentified sailor filmed herself at the Pensacola, Fla. Base during the morning ceremony also refusing to honor the Flag and National Anthem, according to Military.com.
This unidentified sailor is also under reprimand.
Service members not standing and showing respect for the National Anthem could land themselves in deep water, according to Article 92, and could be punishable by jail time. Article 92 clearly states that when the National Anthem is played, and while in uniform, troops MUST stand, face the flag, and salute. While not in uniform, troops MUST stand, face the flag, and place their right hand over their heart. Period.
Those in the military have chosen their paths to protect and defend this great nation of ours, including showing their allegiance to our Flag, a selfless choice that can never be thanked enough or ever be repaid. This act of defiance, however, leaves many baffled and wondering at the implications of such actions.
As of yet, the Defense Department has not given service members any direction dealing with the protests.

My opinion is jail time and then drum her out of the military with no benefits.

OR, put them on kitchen and/or latrine (sp?) for the rest of their tour. Then, LOL, watch them yell “Racism”!

If these black fools don’t see that they are living in the land of the free, send them some place for a wake up call.
In the military you give up some of your rights while defending the constitution.
There a rules for properly addressing the colors. Give them an article 15 or potentially drum them out of the service.
We don’t need the, ISIS, likely could use some more bodies.

As a Marine vet myself, it seems to me that this lady is busy being a “social justice warrior” more than really being about her job. It’s as if her military job is the platform for her to pull this stunt, I say drum her out of the military now with dishonorable discharge with her GI Bill taken away…

COULD IT BE THE, fault of the Commander-in-Chief? over the past several decades the military has changed in its basic training of soldiers, when I enlisted, the first thing they did was break you, and then mold you into the best soldier in the world, a well disciplined, patriotic, hard-bodied soldier. Today, only the soldiers who want to be the best soldier in the world, with absolute pride in your branch of military service, and the country you are serving, make the grade of great soldiers. Nonetheless, our commander in chief has diluted the moral and honor of the military with political correctness, and with the removal of national honor, and respect… especially with the overt systematic disrespect for our nation and for our former heroes, this sort of thing is not only allowed, but has become second place, with allowing the enemy into our ranks, and make a national hero out of a deserter giving him a promotion, and honoring him at the Whitehouse. there was a time when the National Guard and Reserves were trained for the first 6 to 8 weeks, and then they were called into training once a year, The nation’s active military was enlistees, and draftees. They (even the draftees) learned what respect was all about, it became automatic- second nature, and today those who commit for the right reason still become the best soldiers in the world, in spite of all the over-use and abuse that is handed down through the chain of command from the commander-in-chief.
I give my thanks and all respect to our military, and for some to act like this is a spit in the eye of our real honorable heroes who have went before us. I have no respect for them and think they should be “drummed” out of the service.

You seem to hit things spot on RS! Great comment! The blame starts at the top. This is HIS mess on HIS watch. People will do what they are allowed to get away with. This should have been nipped in the bud from the get go with VERY HARSH consequences…Otherwise, where does this behavior REALLY leave us in the long term? Hmmmm.

The Commander in Chief WAS MOST CERTAINLYI an influence…a heavy influence.
Had it been Eisenhower, Patton, or Ike…they’d be in HUGE trouble and in a brig for the rest of their tour.

Break them down two pay grades and leave them there for the balance of their enlistment. If it’s so bad, let them request separation with a General Discharge, and a remark on their DD-214 to carry with them for the rest of their life.

Your too nice… she is not fit to serve and deserves to be publically dishonorably put out. She is a Col. and by her disrespect she does not get any from our military men and women black, brown, white, who have sacrificed their lives for this piece of Black-Lives-Matter garbage.
