Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) appears to be jumping ship on Obamacare after admitting to an audience at the National Press Club Tuesday that the American people didn’t want to make health care reform a priority.

Schumer said Democrats “put all our focus on the wrong problem” and that they have “[blown] the opportunity the American people gave them.”

“The plight of uninsured Americans and the hardships created by unfair insurance company practices certainly needed to be addressed,” he said. “But it wasn’t the change we were hired to make .. Americans were crying out for the end to the recession, for better wages and more jobs — not changes in health care.”

Schumer went on to say that Obamacare made “no political sense” as two-thirds of the uninsured aren’t registered to vote. He also said that it focused on “a small slice of the country,” leaving many middle class families disappointed and their concerns unaddressed.
